Casa Xelajú is committed to providing the best language and cultural education and services possible to our students.
Our Spanish curriculum is aligned with ACTFL standards and incorporates new theories and effective approaches to Spanish language instruction.
Beyond language learning, students have opportunities to learn about Guatemalan culture, including human rights and women’s issues in the country.
For intermediate and advanced students, CX also offers a unique curriculum focused on current events in Guatemala, exploring issues such as genocide, government corruption, poverty, children, mining, neo-liberal policies and repression.
CX is committed to providing the best economic environment for its teachers and staff.
As a socially responsible institute, we strive to create and promote positive labor relations. Full-time teachers receive competitive salaries based on a five-hour working day, along with health care coverage, bonuses, vacation benefits and social security for retirement.
Teachers also receive IRTRA Club membership, giving them and their families access to IRTRA facilities and discounts on hotels.
We believe that satisfied teachers are happy teachers—and that happiness is reflected in the enthusiasm students experience in the classroom.
CX believes strongly in fighting poverty through education and remains committed to supporting local communities.
For more than 16 years, CX has supported the La Pedrera Community Project, including purchasing land for the development of the project.
CX also supports the rural community of Aldea Vela, San Felipe, Reu. Land was purchased and donated to the community, where a kindergarten school and basketball court have been built, with a new middle school also being developed.
In 2011, CX built and donated a computer lab with internet access to the local elementary school. A five-mile wireless project connected the rural school, and together these projects have benefited more than 2,000 people.
We know we cannot change the world, but we can make a difference by nurturing local communities and contributing to their growth. We believe education is an essential tool for eliminating poverty and creating a better life.
